Bosch GLL30 Laser Level Review

A leveling line laser is a great tool for both DIYers and professionals.

The Bosch GLL 30 is an affordable cross line laser that can make projects from hanging pictures to framing wall a whole lot easier.

The GLL 30’s housing is plastic and compact, weighing around a half pound.  There is an On/Off switch on the side and the bottom of the unit has a 1/4” threaded mount for use with the supplied clamp or a tripod.  The supplied clamp can attach to objects from 1/2” to 2 1/4” thick.

The GLL 30 has a self-leveling pendulum unit that allows for 4 degrees of correction with an out of level indicator.  It also has a manual mode if you want to mark angles yourself.  The pendulum also lacks when the unit is turned off for safe transport.

The read lines from the laser are clear at the 30ft range the unit is rated at.  Bosch lists the precision at 5/16” at 30ft which is good for most applications, but not quite exact.  If you’re working with super precision, you might want to go much higher up the product chain.

Using the laser level is easy.  I used the clamp supplied MM2 clamp to attach the laser to the counter.  From there, I was able to easily adjust the height to make sure a recently hung picture was level.  Of course, it wasn’t, but it was a quick fix with the red line on the wall.

After that, I found myself going around the house and checking level on several things.  Luckily, most were good but I was able to correct a few.  I can’t help but think how much easier things like installing a tile backsplash or hanging multiple pictures will be with the aid of this device.

Overall, I think this would make a great entry level or homeowner type unit.  For professional carpenters, the lack of a magnet and short 30ft range might be limiting factors.  In that case, the GLL 55 or higher might be a better choice in the Bosch lineup.
